Skittle uses Ivy Bridge i5, but GTA V doesn't like quad cores when you crank the settings. That's why we're okay due to HT. MY CPU usage on my old Haswell i5 was pinned at 99%. Now on this i7 it sits at around 65-70%. So we can't really go by what we get as GTAV does utilize HT very well.

The 970 out performs the 390 in a few games at 4k, it just depends on the engine the game uses. Like the Unreal Engine 4 the 970 outperforms the 390 by a fair bit. Same as the engine used in Euro Truck Sim 2, Xiggy's 290 kinda struggles to max it at 1080p while i max it with AA at 4k and still achieve 70FPS.

So the whole debate about which is better comes down to the engine used.

TL;DR: Quad cores can be the cause to lower FPS in some games when you crank the settings.

All latest drivers, I think the 390 should perform better than the 970 in GTA V, especially at higher resolutions. If I was playing GTA V at 1080p with a 390 and getting sub 50FPS on Very High settings, I'd be checking that shit out 'cause that shouldn't be right.

The 970 is better than the 390 at 4K. And I am not on AM3+.

but its not lool.

Please stop.

I'd just go with a i5 build he posted.
Dayz and GTA are grinding on the CPU usage.
