Hi I have just bought a new gaming desktop with a gtx 970, the hdmi port on the 970 supports 2.0 and my monitor I believe doesn't supports 2.0 but supports 1.4. My quistion is can I buy a 2.0 hdmi cable and will it still work

Yes, HDMI is backwards compatible so it would work, just not with as high bandwidth compared to a 2.0 cable in a 2.0 port.
