390 - If you want the very best FPS for your money
970 - If you don't mind loosing a couple of frames here and there but require less power when under load.
Only you know what you care about more.

I would take the 970, you wont need a million watts to SLI them if you wanted another one later on. I have had both cards and I can tell you that the performance difference was minimal, the 970 outperformed the 390 in a majority of games.

I had this exact same post up, i went with the r9 390, its will be better with dx 12, but you need a better psu than if u were going with a 970
