Math question: Is the following statement equation an identity (always true at every x). Is the x^2=lxl, <-that is absolute value. Can anybody give me an answer and explain why -1 would or would not work? Also the exponent 2 is under the radical.

-1 would work because the absolute value of zero would be positive

0,1,-1 are all possible solutions that would work

The topic brought up in class though is that why wouldn't the radical and the exponent of 2 cancel out?
