Expect to hear a whole lot more about Li-Fi - a wireless technology that transmits high-speed data using visible light communication (VLC) - in the coming months. With scientists achieving speeds of 224 gigabits per second in the lab using Li-Fi earlier this year, the potential for this technology to change everything about the way we use the Internet is huge.

And now, scientists have taken Li-Fi out of the lab for the first time, trialling it in offices and industrial environments in Tallinn, Estonia, reporting that they can achieve data transmission at 1 GB per second - that's 100 times faster than current average Wi-Fi speeds.

"We are doing a few pilot projects within different industries where we can utilise the VLC (visible light communication) technology," Deepak Solanki, CEO of Estonian tech company, Velmenni, told IBTimes UK.

I'm honestly surprised this is just now a thing. I mean, I'm typing this on a handheld device capable of accessing the sum total of human knowledge. It's about time we get out of the stone age when it comes to internet.

Where I live I can only get UP TOO 3 Mbps. Which is awful speeds. It works yeah but for a gamer it's terrible. I hope someday the U.S. does like North Korea and enables this everywhere around the country someday. But I'm sure it would be outrageous

This is pretty interesting! My wifi runs at 100 upload/download at the minimum.

I loving learning about things like this

This sounds interesting, but I don't see this taking off any time soon. Light as a medium to transmit data is by far the best way to do so, as the throughput we are able to achieve is crazy but I don't see many businesses adopting this standard.

Wifi solutions are relatively easy to implement as you can run a single cat 5e/6 cable to an access point as use PoE to power it. The way it works from the article is that data is transmitted from light bulbs, you're looking into having to completely re wire your existing lighting system or you will need to plan for this during your building phase. Not only that, all office space that I've been in has used traditional fluorescent bulbs to light the office. Can't really put an LED li-fi bulb in any of those and call it good. Another problem is with any light, you need an unobstructed view of the object you want to "transmit" data to meaning anything under desks/shelfs/ any object is going to have reduced speeds or unable to connect.

It's a great step forward, but it's not going to replace wi-fi in the majority of places.

Should be called Lie-Fi..

I really can't see this being a thing (No pun intended)
