I was wondering what your guys opinion was on modding and whether it was illegal or not.
I have seen on a forum that the only thing illegal was distributing tampered versions of the game. I know that it is against the terms of use and that it can get you banned but I was questioning if it was illegal.
Comment your point on this.
Thank you guys for your responses on this I really appreciate it.

No it's not necessarily illegal unless you hack into someone your not supposed to hack into. Modding is different from hacking though

It all depends on what game you want to mod. Different games have different rules and regs so it all depends on what they say in the rules.
VERY generally speaking, unless you stand to make money from it, nothing will happen. Basically if you mod the game is such a way where you are giving it out to people and you take the money instead of the company who made it (I.E. pirating games or charging for recoveries), nothing will happen. They don't care about the kid doing cash drops in GTA V, they will sooner console ban you before they'll take you to court.

Modding is perfectly legal, other than getting ripped games. That's illegal.

Depends, getting free games and DLC's is illegal, but most of everything else is legal.

Also, for anyone else wondering, modded consoles are also legal. It's the things you can do with them (rip games, free DLC, etc..) that is illegal.

Recoveries is not illegal but pirating games is.

It's all illegal without the consent of the person who's created the product. It's just that there are bigger wars to fight.
