I am just wondering can any CPU go onto any motherboard? My dad and I were trying to install a new CPU cooler but the old thermal paste was stuck and we needed up pulling the CPU out and the pins have bent and we don't know if we need a new motherboard or just a CPU. Any help is appreciated

Well I think the best way to check is to use pcpartpicker, as there is a compatibility checker built in. So just start a build, and add all your existing parts, motherboard, gpu, ram etc and then it will show you all cpu's that are compatible

If you have bent the pins on the socket for the CPU, high chance you're going to need to replace the motherboard. Chances are the CPU got of lightly but then again we don't know the extent of the damage without pictures.
Need to know what CPU and motherboard you have currently have and if you can RMA parts?
Again pictures of the damage done would be helpful.

My dad took the actual CPU to his friends and the part where you apply thermal paste is stuck to the heatsink and won't come off. I don't know how to put picture on from phone as I have no computer to upload and put on now

Go to imgur.com on your phone and upload the images. Also what CPU and motherboard do you have? Intel CPUs have the pins on the motherboard while AMD chips (all that I know of) have the pins on the actual chip.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ] are all the CPU's you can get.
Next time, if the thermal paste is too stuck, run a game on it or an intensive program before undoing everything. That way, the thermal paste is warm upon release and will come off easier.
Top tip - To remove thermal paste from the CPU and heatsink, use a bit of aftershave and a tissue.
