Been talking to an army recruiter and I am about 95% sure I will be I swearing in come Febuary to start basic in june.
The only reasoning I have for being hesitant is my family and girlfriend not wanting me to which is understandable.
Will be doing either active for 4 years or 6 years reserve.
Not 100% what I want to do yet as of active or reserve but I will be doing computer networking (or least I hope)
Anyone else serving or thinking of enlisting?

I wanted to enlist, but I'd miss a lot of people in my life.
Thank you for wanting to serve this amazing country. I hope you succeed in whatever you plan on doing.

Regardless of active or reserve, I'll appreciate either.. Takes guts to join the army/any branch of the military.. Thank you if you decide to continue pursuing it

Currently an Army National Guard Infantryman.
This past weekend I had a rock tied to my head because I forgot my helmet. When in reality, I wasn't told to bring it..

Do you support your government 100%? If you don't, I wouldn't go. You are just the pawn of the government, you are disposable. The pay isn't that good any more either.
Also, when you do get out, let's say 2 years after they start another draft, guess who they will call up? You did the training so you are at the top of the list for a draft.

Disagree. I don't trust the government. Specifically the politicians.
But I still serve. I do it for my family, friends, and country- not for the government.
Plus the military has so many benefits, and gives experience, and instills values.
Instantly puts you over any civilian.

I also am enlisting in the Australian Navy (As I'm Australian). I've been appointed to enlist on the 18th February 2017 so I have a good year to fit in time to do stuff with friends and family before I sign away the next 6 years of my life.
To those who mentioned about the government, no, to be frank I think my government are a bunch of bloody idiots who waste money on a helicopter ride that is a 30 minute drive away. But I choose to do it for my friends, my family, and my loved ones and all there loved ones. Plus I have been told I have a massive ego, and I believe that the defence force is my only way of completely filling that ego.
Good job mate, I say be active and just do it.
Good luck on the next 4/6 years

I was going to join (British Army) But going through the process ive realised the only reason i was doing it was because nothing else came up.
i was literally at 2nd interview and when they looked my ear piercing they said that i failed due to that. I had one of those tunnels that stretched your ear and it had to be smaller than 4mm and mine wasnt so i after that i found something else to do and got it out of my mind.
Don't join just because you have nothing else to do, if you wanna do something in IT there are plenty of places you could apply for. start learning new things and getting the information you need to move around get involved with a company and start from there.
If i knew then what i knew now i wouldn't have even thought about it.

Was thinking of joining the service yeah, went to a recruitment office and did my test and shit they were wanting me to come out to train with them like 3 times a week or something. But one of the officers there in the office was a complete dick, he was all like "you do realize we dont need people like you" "we can find someone else" like ok dude you know what im not apart of this yet and even though this was probably a test it totally turned me off the way this asshole was talking to me, and my father was next to me. Idc who you are, dont try and act more powerful than me, I would not be able to last with people always being arrogant assholes.
The way this man presented himself talking down about me made me get up and walk out. Was also 17. Best of luck to you.
