The Oculus Rift virtual reality headset has been put on sale at a price of $599 (£410).
Pre-orders for the CV1 version of the headset are now officially open and the device can be bought via the Oculus website.
Anyone ordering the headset now should have it shipped to them in March, said the Facebook-owned firm.
Reaction on social media was swift, with some saying the final price was far higher than they expected it to be.
The arrival of the headset has been long-awaited since it first appeared on the Kickstarter crowdfunding site in 2012.
The Rift is the first of two mainstream VR devices set to be launched in 2016. Rival HTC is to release the consumer versions of its Vive headset in April.
The move was timed to coincide with the CES tech show in Las Vegas, where Oculus is demoing its headset.

Customers are limited to buying one headset each. Bundled with the headset are the Eve: Valkyrie and Lucky's Tale video games as well as a movement-tracking sensor, cables, a media remote and an Xbox One controller.
Any of you guys going to be investing? With the current price I don't think i'll care that much to try it.

Would rather use the 410 pound for something else to be honest. If it was reduced to around 200 pound in the future, then i would purchase.

Looks like it would be cool, but I'll wait until the price goes down to $100.

The Oculus, to me, isn't worth the $599. There is no way a VR machine should be more than a standard console. If anything, they should be $50 more than a PS4/XBone, or $50 less.
I love VR. I want to get one if I can.

It seems cool, but too rich for my blood.

It's not just for console though, it's also an extension of PC, the problem is they can't make it as cheap because it's a big step in technology and the manufacturing costs of these things must be incredibly high in comparison.
After all, the components used in making the Xbox One and PS4 are pretty sub par.

True. How many companies are creating VR at the moment? Oculus is one of the biggest names to my knowledge.
