It's also seeing a lot more support. Valve has a larger team working on Dota 2, more gamemodes to play, more prize money and tournament support I'm just baffled. The mechanics are so similar the gameplay really isn't that much, it's just about learning different heroes/champions essentially.

I play League, and I enjoy it a lot. I've played Dota in the past, and I just couldn't get the hang of it. It's not as intuitive or as 'smooth' as LoL in my opinion.

Valve having a larger team has nothing to do with the product, it's how they use it. Riot has done a great job with creating a game with a 'smaller' team. I've only ever really played Summoners Rift and Howling Abyss, so different gamemodes aren't really Riot's priority as it might be for Valve. It's better for Riot to focus on one gamemode that everyone plays.

I really don't like the argument of 'more prize money'. While it is true, Riot does a great job of contracts between players.
For example, you might get more money for winning a tournament in Dota. Cool. But what about the players that don't win? They won't get much; if any. Riot pays players respectively, for just playing in the LCS (or equivalent tournament), it doesn't matter if they win or not. This means that there is less prize money, but the teams who don't get even to the quarter finals, still get paid fairly, so the money is spread between the players equally, not just 'the best people get the most money'. How does Dota have more tournament support?

What's RIOT done with the small team that's so good? I mean DOTA 2 has custom games which is thriving. It's essentially like a sub-community of DOTA. Not to mention Valve uses artists that submit their work, idk how RIOT does it but skins get imported based on user votes.

The prize pool of DOTA 2 is equalled out. I mean all of the top 5 paid esports orgs. from last year were all paid so because of DOTA. The top 20 players in the world were all DOTA and athe top 7 teams were DOTA, don't think one was LoL. The DOTA losers still get more than the LoL winners... different gamemodes aren't a priority for Valve, all of the custom games are community made and maintained. DOTA has the ability for tracking tournaments, tournament compendiums, watching them live, participating at ease, rewards for watching, rewards for playing around the time of a tournament.

It just doesn't seem to me that the numbers would be like that just because League plays 'smoother' at all. In fact, I wonder how many League fans actually know about DOTA and how it works. I wonder if more people would like an actual F2P game?

What incentive do you have when playing DOTA 2? Nothing. Everything is already unlocked and available to you. I didn't get into it because there was no reward for playing since everything is already unlocked. I started playing league in Season 2 and I had only the free rotation champions. What kept me playing is wanting that new champion for 6300 IP. There was a reward for playing, a new champion to play.

You know why they are the top payed teams and players? Because the Total Prize Money Awarded was like $55 Million, compared to League of Legends at $25 Million, and Counter Strike: Global Offensive at $9 Million.

That statistic proves nothing, who cares about the money.

As viewers we only care about the entertainment of it all. Each game has its respective community and each company does things differently, so why even compare them?

League and Dota 2 are pretty much the same as the console war between PS4 and Xbox One. Everyone has their own opinions on which they think is better.

league is more popular cause it really hit the casual market before dota and it has a less step learning curve.

Dota is completely f2p and league has a small pay to win aspect with buying characters which does give you an advantage over people who can't afford to buy so they are stuck with the rotation. It isn't a bad model by any means and it is on the good side of pay to win. It's not heaps broken ya know.

i dont agree with you saying league is Pay2play the only thing they can actually do is buy skins,champions with paying real money they cant buy runes or anything that makes it unfair yes they could buy all champions and u maybe dont have some of the more expensive champions but that doesnt matter the price of the champion doesnt mean how good the champion is its all down to the players skill so league is F2P and is completely F2P unless u want to get the champions quicker which will give u no advantage unless u get unlucky and get countered but that has nothing to do with P2P.

But like someone said earlier why do people prefer league?
i prefer league because when i was deciding to play league or dota i looked at dota and had no idea what was going on during the game but i understood league, league is a easier concept of dota but i just prefer league but the main reason i decided to play league instead was because like the guy said earlier what do u actually get as a reward for playing dota? in league you get ip to buy the champions you want thats what really threw me off dota u already had everything u wanted so there was no "grinding" concept to it to be able to afford your next favourite champions that is why i think alot of people prefer league over dota

That statistic was used in a direct response to an invalid claim. That statistic only applies for professionals, but the money incentive is still higher for Dota players compared to League. My incentive for playing Dota is like playing any game, for fun. I have been playing since 2013 and still haven't learned every hero yet. But, I won't have the limited selection which for me would decrease my playing time. I learned one hero in Dota, then moved on. I probably have 20 heroes that I can play comfortably now, about 60-75 I can play but probably won't do amazing with and the rest I either haven't touched yet or can't play.

I'm just genuinely curious as to why it's more popular. It would be like if Call of Duty Online was released worldwide but the PC player database of Black Ops 3 is higher, it would just need answering as to why.

I personally believe that Dota has more freedom than League. With the amount of hours required to purchase all heroes without using real funds being so high, it's definitely P2W. No 2 ways about it. I've watched some League and one of my friends plays it, the reason he won't switch is because he's used to League and I respect that. I just won't switch because I will just want to find my best hero asap and learn it, which wouldn't be possible without paying through my nose.

It's the youngens that want to get into pro eSports I don't understand why they chose League.
