A few of my IRL friends watch anime, while the others hate it
I'm the one in the middle that never got into it although I watched DBZ and pokemon as a kid.
What I was wondering, if I start watching anime what anime's should I watch first?

Yes, you should there's many genres to choose from and not just "anime" and then other shows.

I always recommend Psycho-Pass to people that want to get into anime as their isn't many anime troupes if not any within the show.

Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden are also good starting anime that you may have watched as kid and just don't remember it that well.

I just recently started getting into anime myself and went back and watched Naruto and am still currently watching Shippuden and they are awesome shows to start off with in my opinion.

If you do decide to watch Naruto I hope you enjoy the fillers.

Think it's been like 2 seasons now where Shippuden hasn't done anything but fillers.

I don't know whats worse, having to wait until a new season comes out to see what happens or having filler thrown in my face until they decide to continue on with canon.

Just read the manga if you're against filler, you won't need to wait on new chapters to come out either since it finished.

As for OP decide for yourself. There are many different guides/pictures online detailing starter shows based on what might interest you...

Example..

Give some of the most popular shows a try and go from there! Like One Punch Man, Attack on Titan, Fate/stay Night, and some of the other ones mentioned by other people on here!

Quick rundown of all the anime that newbs like.

Attack on Titan

Bleach (without filler)
Deadman Wonderland
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Guilty Crown
Naruto/Shippuden
One Piece
Soul Eater
