I would personally go with an iPhone.
This is a biased opinion though as that is the only phone I have ever owned!
Anyways, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

That's all I ever had was iPhones too... just ordered me a new iPhone 6S+ in Space Grey, and then got an Otterbox to top it off ;)

Are you looking for a lot of customization features?
If so, then I would go with the Samsung S6 Active.
For me, I have the 6S and I love it. All I need in a phone is good battery life, and the ability to use Spotify, text, call, and play clash of clans. iPhones are extremely reliable as long as you take care of them. Make sure to get a decent case and be careful with it. They will last a long time. I had my 4S for 4 years and nothing ever went wrong with it. Never cracked a screen, buttons always functioned, all around good phone.
Never really been a Android user. I just wanted something simple and reliable so that is why I went with the iPhone 6S.

I love the 6S personally but if I could have known about the S6 Edge or S6 Acitive I would have gone with those. My friend has the active and he says it's the greatest life saver ever

Specs are boot important. Your opinion of the operating system is. So what you should be asking yourself is Android or IOS?
I'll edit this later and add more info.
