Recently purchased a new laptop for general use as I'm currently doing a course & I need a laptop for doing assignments at home. It is a windows 10 Toshiba laptop, my problem is every time I open the word document I emailed to myself from college it will not let me open it & keeps suggesting that I should purchase "office" ..

I have tried downloading Word from the app-store but I still can't open the files to work on them?

Any help would be much appreciated.

You can try opening it in google docs, you will just need a google account.

You can also try open office, which is a free office replacement. It wont have all the features of word, but it may be able to help.
