Hey guys,

I recently noticed that I was getting a really High idle temps on my 4790k.
At idle it shows to be at 60c and after a few mins of gaming it goes up to 80c.

I'm using the stock cooler and as far as I know, the CPU is not being over clocked.

What could be causing these idle temps? Is it the cooler?
If so, please suggest a cooler that I should use. I have a small case, so keep that in mind on suggestions. (Corsair Carbide Series Air 240 High Airflow MicroATX)

The stock cooler should be completely fine if your not overclocking, but when was the last time you replaced your thermal paste? Also does your case have a good airflow?

I had the same problem had temps up to 100C and bought a hyper 12 evo and it went to around 50C

The air flow is good. Also, I wasn't aware that you had to regularly thermal paste? I'm still new to PCs.

I figured out the issue. My PC's power settings were on high performance. This was causing my CPU to clock higher than usual. I turned that off and the temps went down to 40-45C.

I went ahead and bought a new cooler though. Noctua Dual Tower CPU Cooler NH-D9L

80'c is very normal with the stock cooler, That's nothing to worry about many CPU's maximum TDP is rated lower on the package/website as a fail safe. If you do feel that the temps are getting to highyou can always invest a decent cooler such as a hyper 212 evo they are very cheap but very effective it has the best bang for your buck in the cooler category in my opinion.

There is not definite span of time when you should change your thermal paste. I usually do it when I notice my cpu temp rising on idle. There are many guide/videos on the internet if you need help with that in the future.

I was having the exact same problem. The solution for me was simply removing the old thermal paste and re-applying with more than i put on the last time. I also made sure that I was tightening the CPU cooler enough. I hope this helps.

I'm gonna end up having to do that when I replace the cooler in tomorrow.
