if your avatars are greyed out its an avatar update but what I would do to be safe is not to update it and just reflash ur nand

If it's an avatar update then there is a different message on screen that says something about a security update. Just to be safe put the avatar update on a USB and try it like that. Maybe your KV is a beta dashboard KV. I had that once so every time I put that KV on it would ask me to update the xbox.

yeah I've been hearing about these beta kvs but have never had one since I heard they were rare

I go and try to modify my avatar and says I need a system update to use this feature, and my avatars are grey out ! Kv seller said all of his are not beta kvs

If avatars are grey then it's an avatar update. I would do it from a USB to be safe but doing it from xbox live should be fine.
