I had my braces on about 5 years ago, was told would have them in a year, ended up having them for 3 years, when they give you braces they will put your teeth in to this weird pot, it molds a hole of your teeth so they know the size that's probably the most discomfort it feels as if it will pull your teeth out! The only time then you might have a bit of pain is getting your braces tightened every so often. The reason my braces were on 2 years longer was because I played rugby and wasn't wearing gum shields causing my wire to snap so just make sure to look after them!
