I just build my very first computer and I am trying to figure out which version of windows (8.1 or 10) is the closest to windows 7 ultimate (on my laptop and i would like to stay with that feel). I have absolutely no interest in the tiles of the updated versions of windows so whatever i have to do to steer clear of them, I would be delighted to take part in. I like when i click on the start button the things that pop up are recent things I have used on 1 list and "documents, pictures, music, games, computer, control panel, etc..." Whichever version is closer to that. I looked around on google and Youtube a bit for this stuff and i didn't find what i was looking for. Some info and personal insight would be great. I can add a picture or 2 of what I am talking about if it doesn't make sense.

Thanks everyone!

With windows 10 you can change the start menu settings like this

open Settings and click Personalization

Click Start and under Start behaviors you'll see an option to Use full-screen Start when in desktop

Click the toggle to turn this option off

and that looks like this

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

but you can also install a 3rd party app like classic shell, to make it look like window 7's start menu

you will have to fiddle around with it tho

and that can look like this

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

It will take some time to configure classic shell the way you want if you go that route
and if you go the classic shell route PM me and i can help you set it up and get it how you like

I saw a video where windows 8 was faster in almost every way than windows 10 so i'm leaning towards 8 now...This was back in 2015, do you know anything about this? can I do that windows 7 replication for windows 8 too? Or is that just a windows 10 thing? thanks!

Ya you can do it with Windows 8 as well but
Windows 10 has way more functionality and support then windows 8.1
And as regards to the speed there really isn't a difference that i have noticed

If you already have a copy of Windows 7 you should just be able to download the upgrade from Microsoft (maybe, not 100% sure if it is still free)

If not you can buy a product key from kinguin
For really cheap so try downloading it from Microsoft and see how that goes if it asks for a product key buy one from kinguin

Or you can just do it the "illegal" but i can't tell you how to do that on here
