Whenever I see someone post their gamer-tag I usually see a comment saying you have to blank out a letter or you shouldn't leave that here. Is that against some condition on this site that you aren't supposed to put a GT?

It is so the gamertag/account doesn't get banned, It is not against any rules on this site.

People are paranoid that MS is roaming the site banning tags even if they were not doing anything against the terms of service.

During the MW3 days I remember there was a guy with the GT named "The Pro"(MS employee) who would just ban people for the hell of it. I fell victim to him once.

But if you are talking about people marking out tags with an astricks if they are selling it. That is against the ToS and you will get banned for that.

Wayyyy back in the day, back when MW2 was still relevant, "they" (I don't know if they where directly from Xbox, or from Treyarch, or Activision, or what) would scour forums like this looking for people modding and cheating, then they would be banned.
