Currently I am driving a 2012 Honda Civic EX sedan, but it isn't quite working out so well with my career path, being in construction I am in need of a vehicle that is more capable of driving on site, and carrying tools and equipment ect..

I've been looking into buying a used Ford F-150 from a certified used dealer in my local town, the company I currently work for gets fleet pricing on these trucks, it's a 2013 Ford F-150 Lariat, crew cab, V8, and 4 wheel drive it has 24k miles on it.

It's priced at $33.5k but with the fleet pricing I should get a good amount discounted

Anyone have any experience with these f150 v8 engines, in terms of reliability and towing power? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

That's a rip-off. You can get a brand new XL, and some XLT's for that. I myself will not be buying a Ford, you can get a Ram 2500 (brand new 0 miles) for 31k at one of my local dealerships.

Which V8 are you looking at? Predominately they are 5.0's, but in some limiteds and others (including SVT raptor) they used a 6.2L V8. I haven't heard anything particularly bad about the 5.0, however I'd much prefer the 3.5L Ecoboost. Yeah it's a V6, get over it. It's a lot better than the 5.0, even just looking simply at numbers, the recommended max towing on the 5.0 is 9,800 lbs with a regular cab 4x2. The 4x4 goes down 100 lbs. The 3.5L GTDI has a max recommended tow of 11,300 regular cab (4x2 or 4x4).

002 whatcha got against the New F150s? Theyre bullet proof from what I have heard. Nothing but great reviews. If you want a mad amount of recalls, get a Dodge. A guy I work with has sent his 2013 to the dealer 11 times since he bought it. Electrical problems, air bags, truck revving low in 4x4, etc. Not even kidding the truck went into (He called it safety mode) on the highway and wouldnt go faster than 25mph, and saying that it had temps way high on the truck when you literally could reach in and touch the block with your hand. No heat. Turned to out to be a sensor, and the ECU tricked itself and thought it needed limp mode. There junk. Buy a new chevy or and F150. The dodges are shit.

Ford is having a hell of a time with their trucks right now, they died in 04-08 F-150's with the 3 valve 5.4, and then 08-10 diesels (arguably 04-07 as well).

To start on the 09-14/11-14's, the brakes are known to be horrible as in warping rotors and short brake life in general. A lot of people had an issue where the gas engine sounded like a diesel and they ended up having to replace the entire engine. This occurred within 50k miles. 2009/2010 are especially known for blowing engines. There have also been numerous complaints of the spark plugs blowing out which Ford has had this issue on all of their half ton trucks since '97 and their gas super duty trucks. [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] is a website showing NHTSA complaints on these trucks.

I've driven a '16 F-150 and I can honestly say I will never buy one. The truck is very light which means it doesn't feel as solid on the road. You can feel the wind from semi trucks push you around. Not to mention this horrible aluminum body idea. Yeah it's a cool idea because theortically it won't rust, but it's easily damaged (yes you can look it up and people hit the aluminium and steel beds with golfballs and the aluminum bed did better, but aluminum is easier to dent with sustained pressure). It is also harder to work with, which means harder / more expensive to repair, which means insurance costs go up. Also, electronic parking brake? So what happens when your battery dies? I guess no parking brake, better carry some wheel chocks with you and be quick on your feet lol.

In general ever new vehicle (mainly trucks) will be in and out of the shops for recalls. Trucks more-so than cars just because manufacturers try to make the payload, towing, and MPG numbers super high and it really doesn't work that well so things overheat and brake.

If I where the OP, I'd look for a '99-03.5 super duty with the 7.3 and re-work everything. Get a whole new drive train. It will be the cost of a new truck and look like a 20 year old truck, however I can guarantee you that the truck will outlast any new truck. It will also be cheaper to insure. The reason that truck will last and these new trucks drop like flies is because these new trucks have to conform to emissions standards which get harsher and harsher. How do you propel a 6,000 pound truck down the road while having clean emissions? Essentially restricting the engine (you can see an example of this in the DPF's of the diesel trucks). This overheats the engine and boom, dead truck. That 20 year old truck doesn't have that crap, you might have to deal with an EGR valve, but BFD.

I thought about going the route of an older 7.3 before, but I'm not really looking for a workhorse and much as a daily driver kinda truck, we have company trucks which have the 6.0 power stroke engine in them, and they are a mess. I know it's 2 completely different engines but I don't really have that much of a need for that heavy of a towing capacity. The discount would take care of the price, an executive at the company bought a Lincoln MXZ or MxK I believe, whichever one is the sedan that had 15k miles for 35k when it was listed as 53.

Yeah the 6.0 is not a daily driver. The 7.3 is absolutely able to be a daily driver, but it depends who you are. I don't mind a rough ride so the leaf spring front suspension doesn't bother me. As you know, they are loud, still doesn't bother me.

The newer 150's might be a valid option but I know I personally wouldn't be buying a new vehicle if I didn't have to drive up to 400 miles a day. All the research I've been doing is telling me to go to the Ram 2500's. They will ride a ton better because they have a coil spring rear suspension.

An older 7.3 would make a great choice for a daily driver they cannot be beaten for performance and mileage with good maintenance and I would prefer one to almost any of the new trucks today.

That recall only applies to the trucks fitted with the 3.5L eco boost V6 engine. I was looking to get a 5.0L v8. If I had the time and know how of how to maintain a diesel truck I would without a minutes hesitation buy a 7.3.

Why go for the V8 when the V6 ha far better towing capabilities?
