Okay so, I'm sort of a nub at networking I know a little something but being careful doesn't hurt. So I'm running just default xfinity at the moment modem router combo atm Arris TG862G/CT Xfinity Residential Gateway + Router but I want to get ASUS(R) RT-N66R Wireless Router which has almost 4x the download speed and Upload and has farther range. Can I run these both at the same time. Asus as Router and Arris as modem or would I be better off running modem on its own?

It depends. Xfinity is coax I believe so it doesn't really matter. I prefer two-in-one modems where it has both. As long as you're hard wired (ethernet-connected) you should have your ideal speeds.
