What type of application do you want to build? Have any ideas on any projects?

I recommend you post the languages you are familiar with so people replying can gauge an idea of the kinda programmer they'd be working with.

I don't mind joining a project for development.
I currently am most familiar with Java and Front-end Website development.

If you wanted to make something as a 'test' of your ability, you should try to remake something that has already been done.

Take the key functionality and make it better; to practice my web development, I take other websites and create them myself. Change up the css a bit to my liking, add new features/change current ones, etc.

Just registered because I saw this post. I have a few projects and have been thinking of getting a team together. PM me if you are interested. I can't explain them publicly on this forum. Most use JAVA, for its cross platform and easy to port to android features. Also have some PHP and maybe Python getting thrown in (although Java seems to have phased out the Python).
