So my CPU fan is dying and I've been planning an upgrade for a while, I'm just wondering if I should bother upgrading other components while I'm at it.

This is my current build:

I'm planning on getting this case for sure:

I'm undecided whether I should stay air cooled or go liquid ([email protected] currently), but these are the two options I'm considering:

Additionally, my CPU is getting a little outdated, so I'm considering replacing that I'm going to be tearing everything apart anyways. But I'd also have to replace the mobo with a LGA 1150 if I do that.

Money isn't an issue, but I don't want to do a full upgrade if I wont get a significant performance boost from the CPU.

Suggestions?

I'd suggest getting a better cooler such as the H100i and just overclocking a bit more as sandy bridge is pretty capable at achieving great overclocks, nice choice in case have the same one,
You could replace it but from sandy bridge to skylake you're looking at a 15% IPC gain overall.

In my opinion if you really wanted to upgrade I'd look at X99.

since money isn't a issue

What I would suggest is instead of switching to LGA 1150 why don't you just switch to LGA 1151 it would give you better support and significant performance.

I would swap out the cpu to a 6700K since you can overclock

Then I would get an AIO liquid cooler, the h100i GTX is a nice cooler so i would go with that

Now for mobo, The Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI is a nice mobo to go with for overclocking

Then we come to the RAM I would suggest 16GB of Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 (since you can't use DDR3 on skylake mobos)

If you still want to go with 1150 you can get

CPU: i7 4790k this CPU give nice overclocks and even without it's still a good CPU

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-GAMING I love this mobo for overclocking and gaming

I would still go with the H100i GTX

other that that everything else is fine

I'm not really sold on spending $500 for a 10-15% performance boost. If it were more significant I'd do it, but meh.

Hyper 212 EVO and H100i GTX are totally different leagues. They're both pretty poor choices as well. The NZXT Kraken X61 is the same price as the H110i GTX, but a bette coolerr;

Or, you could get an NH-D15(S), or a nice or cooler from Phanteks or Cryorig maybe. Your 2600k is starting to get a little dated, but it is still fine, upgrading to LGA1150 wouldn't make any sense. You could upgrade to a 6700k, it would give you a noticeable performance increase, but not huge. X99 with a 5820k, or 6800k would probably be a better idea, but only if you're going to make use of 6 cores. CPU wise, I'd personally be waiting for Zen to upgrade. If Zen is fairly uninteresting, then I'd probably wait for Intel's next socket.

X99 isn't an upgrade Alex you bean. It's a costly solution for not much of a gain.

Speed, here's what I'd do. Get a decent AIO, see if you can get any more performance out of your CPU by overclocking a bit more. If your happy with it, leave as is. If not, I'd wait for Zen or another Intel release. If you want it sooner, skylake isn't a bad choice.

X99 would be a great gain but like Sanctorum said, only if he uses all 6 cores. H100i for the price does not cool very well, I vouch for Sancotrum and would recommend the Kraken X61.

If you want an air cooler than I would suggest : [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

I ordered the H100i (before I saw the X61 recommendations, but whatever) and the case today.

I'll probably end up holding off on a CPU upgrade until something more impressive comes out.
