Depends on the type of work you're doing and who you're doing it for. I have a friend that does freelance professional graphic design and made a few thousand dollars for doing 3 or 4 book covers.

The pay as a GFX artist is normally $20-$200 a month depending on skill, rates, and business.
As far a graphic designer you're looking at anywhere from $1000-$1800 a month starting.
Once you have a degree and an established portfolio you should be clearing 70K+ annually.

The information here is based on hourly/salary, as far as freelance consider it a bonus $1000+ a month.
That is, in a professional setting.

Up your game from GFX to Graphic Design, learn the tricks of the trade of freelancing then the world is your oyster.

This is like asking Van Gogh how much his painting were worth when he first painted them.

If you are talking about the actual job field "graphic design"
they make somewhere around 25-40k a year.

If you are talking about "GFX"
I've seen some good designers charge anywhere from $10 a project
to $1000 dollars per a project

Sometimes they even charge hourly
which is usually $10-$20 an hour.

It depends on how good they are
and how good they think they are.

I have some real life friends that are have a degree and everything in the US.
They said this is very rare.
The salaries i mentioned above is what they said they are going to get paid.

70K+ statement was based off of where I live, in CT we get paid a lot more because we get taxed a lot more.
70k-100k a year is a skilled designer who also freelances, your average salary or hourly designer would clear closer to 40k-50k in a overall US demographic.
I personally work in the field on a professional level and I can assure it is not very rare if you have the skill and dedication.
That just happens to be on the higher end of the scale, shoot for the stars and make bankroll
