and since he agreed to the food,he could have just asked for money for the alcohol, but I get it it's kinda shitty how he's wasting money on that

It's the reality I guess, just because you bought him a sandwich doesn't mean he's not going to drink. He might have an underlying problem with alcohol and albeit you buying him the sandwich was a nice gesture that isn't exactly going to change his life but I'm sure he appreciated it.

Think about his situation and potential mental health issues, many homeless people become alcoholics and addicts whilst on the streets, no one will give them a chance so they don't feel part of society, worthless. Drink & Drugs is their way to get through the day, and night, without pain and with something to alter their mind.

It's sad but it's true, i bet the man in question would've loved to have gone and bought food or a nights accomodation at a homeless centre but he may have seen prices, he may have had people laugh or blatantly judge him.. Forcing him to lose hope and return to a store to use money to buy alcohol/drugs.

Addictions are serious things.
It's hard to let them go from doing it for so long.

I've given a lot of money to homeless people that I see on the streets. There aren't many in my town, but when I go to Camden Yards (Baltimore Orioles stadium) there is almost always someone standing outside the stadium, asking for money or something.

Most of the time, I give them something. I couldn't imagine not living in a house, or living in a house but not being able to pay the bills to continue to pay them.

A lot of the time you can tell if someone if actually struggling in life by the reaction they give after you give them something. The most I've ever given to one person at a time was one hundred dollars. I gave it to a woman sitting outside of the stadium, holding a sign. This was roughly two years ago, and I do not remember exactly what the sign said, but it was something along the lines of, "Single mother, two kids, evicted and living with my parents, looking for job, need extra money".

Well, I believed her. And, after I gave her the money, her face was priceless. I don't think she realized what I had given her at first, because when I gave it to her she was appreciative, you could tell that. But after a few seconds and she looked at what she was holding she started to cry and thank me like I just won the lottery and gave her my entire winnings.

There are some people that genuinely need help. Don't let one person ruin it for those who need the help. Just because you saw him doing to get alcohol, doesn't mean that he didn't genuinely need help.

He probably wouldn't care that you're disappointed in him.

This mentality that we need to pity homeless people is helpful up to the point that we start judging them for doing what we don't think they should do.
People with families, jobs, homes can be alcoholics and most people won't care.
But a homeless person - who probably hates life and wants to die but doesn't have the constitution to kill himself - has a drink and we're all disappointed in him?

It's easy when we're sat in our homes on our comfy beds to say, "If I was in that position I would be proactive and get a job."
If I was in his position I'd probably want a drink too. What is disappointing to me is that we look at homeless people and stereotype them as 'down on their luck,' or 'having a rough time.'
What we need to realize is that if you offered every homeless person the choice between a sandwich and a pistol loaded with one bullet, the majority would take the sandwich, but there would still be some who would take the pistol.

At least he had a full stomach while drinking. If it wasn't for you he'd have been hungry and still spent the money he had on alcohol. That's why you should always give the homeless food and water instead of cash.

Do you have any clue what is like to be homeless? What does it matter to you what he spends the little money he has on? Its sad that he will probably never get out of the situation hes in if he keeps buying booze and shit but hey if it helps him cope, whatever dude.
