Why are people so against vegans and vegetarians?

I don't use TTG much, I just lurk around and talk in the shoutbox but I saw this thread the other day and so many people were completely against changing their ways and they wouldn't eat meat that didn't involve harming animals and preferred to just eat regular meat instead.

https://www.thetechgame.com/Forums/t=7597799/would-you-buy-this-product.html

People clearly couldn't see the difference between meat that was made without harming animals and meat that's taken from animals after the animals go through horrible living conditions and are pumped full of steroids and are just generally extremely unhealthy animals.

Being a vegan is just a more healthy way off living. You generally get less diseases, live longer and just feel better because you're not harming animals. If everyone was a vegan then billions of animals wouldn't die every year to farmers and people would generally be healthier and better off.

It also annoys me when people who aren't vegan just say stupid stuff like "you can't eat enough protein when you're a vegan, you need to eat meat". No, you can find protein in loads of vegan foods like Soy Milk, Lentils, Tofu and you barely need that much protein as a healthy human anyway.

Even when I'm at friend's houses and stuff, I normally can't eat dinner with them because all they eat is just processed stuff that's completely poison to your body and when I say that I don't want to eat it because it's unhealthy then they complain and claim I have "no idea what I'm talking about".

Loads of people are extremely ignorant when it comes to dieting and do stupid things like under- eating and basically starving themselves to lose weight when you don't even need to. If you eat a healthy vegan diet, you can literally lose weight without even counting calories.

I'm not trying to make this thread to flame or anything, I'm just wondering why are people so stuck in their ways and so negative towards vegans? Even vegetarians get loads of hate from what I've seen.

Personally I can care less eat what you want.

I'm going to eat what I want and you can eat what you want, as long as you like it that's all that matters.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with being a vegetarian or a vegan, in fact, there's a lot of pros to it. I did quite a lot of research on veganism and it's definitely something that I've been considering on giving a try. It will definitely be difficult to adapt to a new lifestyle but I believe it would be worth it and benefit me in the long run. The reason people dislike vegans may be because they post about it on social media but that personally doesn't bother me whatsoever. I find that the reason they're posting information about veganism is to get more people to realize what's in the foods that they're eating and how it can make a negative impact to your health. That could be a possible reason but I'm sure there are plenty more.

Hey that looks familiar

Not to flame but people are so ignorant, that thread wasnt even about vegans, that product isnt even meant for vegans yet most of the comments had something to with vegans. I get it sure, there are some pretty annoying vegans ( I would know because im a vegan) but guess what? PEOPLE are annoying. Omnivores will bring up the whole "vegans never shut up" argument but its like... have you ever met someone who like football? They never shut up about, have you ever met someone who really like minecraft? They never shut up about it, have you ever met someone who likes cars? They never shut up about given the chance to talk about it.

When it comes to human interactino face to face I N E V E R tell anyone im a vegan, usually USUALLY its omnivores that ASK me like "hey why you buying all this tempeh? are you a vegetarian" then I will reply "no im a vegan" then they get all defensive????????????? You asked me a **** question and I answered it, stop bitching about vegans being annoying PEOPLE ARE ANNOYING.

That was totally off topic but just had to get it out given the chance to vent on a vegan thread. Being a vegan has proven to be healthy but you can also be healthy eating animals/animal products, its a trade off in most situations. Oh well, we all are going to die eventually, some sooner than others and im ok with that.

I just wanted to touch on some of the things you said because some of them are either slightly out of context or just completely wrong, however I do agree with you on some of your points.

FaZeFoxie wrote People clearly couldn't see the difference between meat that was made without harming animals and meat that's taken from animals after the animals go through horrible living conditions and are pumped full of steroids and are just generally extremely unhealthy animals.

People can see the difference between meat that's produced via animals dying, and meat that's produced unnaturally and through radiation. They either don't care or don't seem to think that they have the power to stop it.

Secondly, not all animals are reared in horrific conditions and pumped full of steroids. I buy all my meat from a local butchers and I know where they get their stock from and it's a local farm where the animals aren't extremely unhealthy and they're raised properly. On the downside, the meat is more expensive, however it's a small price to pay for your health.

Just for a small note, giving animals steroids has absolutely no effect on the standard of the meat or how healthy it is. Steroids are just synthetic hormones which are signals sent between the brain and the body. Eating meat from an animal that has more hormones than most of their kind will only cause the animal to have less healthy organs and a lot more meat. You're not going to be unhealthy from eating from an animal on steroids.

Have you ever heard this quote?

The flame that burns Twice as bright, burns half as long.
- Lao Tzu, Te Tao Ching

The strongest man in the world may be the strongest man but it's very unlikely that he will live longer than the average person. People who push themselves to the extreme and weigh more, often don't live aslong as someone who weighs less and doesn't push their body as hard. It's disappointing but it's just a fact of life.

Basically what I mean is, if you spend your whole life overweight then you've got to accept that you're probably not going to live until one hundred and twenty years old. People who are heavier and stronger generally don't live aslong as someone who is underweight and can't lift as much and weigh less.

Vegan food has literally no calories, meaning it's extremely hard to actually gain weight. Which means that most vegans are either underweight or don't weigh a lot. Of course people who are underweight are going to live longer than people with non vegan diets because people who are extremely overweight are considered to eat a non-vegan diet.

I would love to see a vegan diet compared to a healthy balanced diet of meat and fruit/vegetables because a diet alone doesn't make you healthy. You can eat all the fruit and vegetables you want but if you drink alcohol, smoke and do no exercise then it's all completely useless.

I do agree however, that if less people ate meat then the world would be better off, however "less people" would literally be billions. The meat and dairy industry is so strong that it would take almost everyone to stop eating animal products to stop farmers from profiting.

FaZeFoxie wrote It also annoys me when people who aren't vegan just say stupid stuff like "you can't eat enough protein when you're a vegan, you need to eat meat". No, you can find protein in loads of vegan foods like Soy Milk, Lentils, Tofu and you barely need that much protein as a healthy human anyway.

Everyone is built differently and has a different amount of muscle mass.

Most vegans are generally quite skinny and they're not carrying much muscle. I'm coming in at almost 210lbs and there's simply no way that I'm going to be able to maintain my size by eating vegan food. It would literally take so much of my day up just from eating food that it literally wouldn't be possible for me to do it. I would rather just drink milk and eat meat instead of spending hours eating food that I don't enjoy when at the end of the day I'm eating for the purpose of gaining weight.

So for me personally, how the hell am I going to eat over two hundred grams of protein from vegan food? That's like five kilograms worth of Soy Milk and it's literally not possible.

FaZeFoxie wrote Loads of people are extremely ignorant when it comes to dieting and do stupid things like under- eating and basically starving themselves to lose weight when you don't even need to. If you eat a healthy vegan diet, you can literally lose weight without even counting calories.

Talking about ignorant people, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

If calories in> required daily calories - You gain weight.

If calories in< required daily calories - You lose weight.

Basically, everyone has a set amount of calories they need each day to function and if you eat less than this, you will lose weight and if you eat more then you will gain weight. It's completely irreverent how much fat is in the food, sodium, sugar ETC. It's completely based off the calories.

If your body needs 2000 calories to function on a daily basis, you eating 2000 calories and then burning off 200 by exercising is completely identical to just eating 1800 because at the end of the day, your body only has 1800 calories to utilize and it's in a two hundred caloric deficit.

It's doesn't matter if you burnt of two hundred calories or just ate 200 less calories than you normally do because it your body will have to burn fat to compensate for the two hundred calories it needs anyway.

The reason I said that vegans are generally underweight (and I'm not being prejudice or stereotypical or whatever) is because the majority of vegan foods are extremely low in calories and you would have to eat an absolutely crazy amount of vegan food if you wanted to gain weight. So most vegans tend to not each a lot of calories, resulting in them not carrying much fat compared to non-vegans.

FaZeFoxie wrote I'm not trying to make this thread to flame or anything, I'm just wondering why are people so stuck in their ways and so negative towards vegans? Even vegetarians get loads of hate from what I've seen.

From my experience there's two different kinds of vegans.

Some just do their own thing, they don't try to persuade you to become a vegan and don't mind if you eat animal products around them. I have absolutely no problem with these kind of vegans and I'm happy for them to spend extra money on vegan products if it makes them feel better and aslong as they have no problem with me eating animal related food then we're totally cool.

The other kind of vegan is the type of person that constantly reminds you that billions of animals are slaughtered every year and that because I eat meat, then I'm a bad person and I shouldn't let these corporations decide what I want to eat. They'll also moan that because they eat a "vegan diet", they're far healthier than me.

If you aren't trying to persuade me to become a vegan then I have absolutely no problem with you eating a vegan diet or doing whatever you want, however I honestly don't see what you're going to achieve. What I mean is, no big corporation actually cares if you don't buy meat because there's somebody next door to you that will. You not eating meat has absolutely zero effect on the number of animals being slaughtered each year by farmers and they honestly don't care. They make billions from the animal industry and they'll keep doing it, aslong as they profit. So why put yourself at a disadvantage by not eating meat? Irrelevant if you buy meat from the shop or not, they will still sell everything in their store and it will still be restocked the next day, irrelevant of weather or not you purchase the meat.

You're totally right in saying that if everyone was a vegan/vegetarian then less animals would be killed and you're right. Less animals would die but that's never going to happen. As cruel as it sounds, animals literally do nothing. They just roam around fields eating all day and don't contribute to the world. Human beings are omnivores and we benefit from eating both types of food and there's absolutely no disadvantage to eating both animals and fruits/vegetables.

You did a good rant but you were wrong on a lot of points. Vegans have only really started to come around recently because there simply wasn't the same amount of vegan food available twenty years ago as there is today. Restaurants and cafes didn't sell vegetarian or vegan options back then and people would have thought you were strange not drinking milk or consuming any kind of animal product.

People are still getting used to the idea of vegans and vegetarians and it will take sometime.

I don't really have anything against vegans or vegetarians, but I absolutely hate when they start to push their agenda and try to convince others that their way of life is better and that people who eat meat are stupid. I do not care what you eat, but it makes me mad when they start to claim that being vegan or vegetarian is better for the environment / better for the world because I do not believe that. Call me ignorant or whatever, but humans were meant to eat meat and our bodies are made to process it. I just believe that vegans/vegetarians who keep to themselves about their eating lifestyle are better and I just don't like when they become very passionate and try to persuade others.

Just throwing it's out there, a food chain is in order for everyone. We are at the top for a reason, as if we aren't killing animals the wouldn't the population increase drastically, and cause animals everywhere to mess everything up. It would drastically effect the economy due to animals (you might know this but animals and food is huge in the economy) it would take millions out of jobs and prices reflect on supply & demand. Just my small input on this

To be honest, I don't care what you want to eat. You want to eat some leafs? Go for it. You want some lemon in your water? Do it, it doesn't affect me. What I hate is when I'm peacefully eating after a hard days work and some person decides to criticize me calling me an animal killer and telling me meat isn't healthy and blah blah blah. Those are the people that give vegetarians and vegans a bad name.
