Im currently just working in retail trying to make some money to get through college etc. I have a friend who works as an iron worker and offered me an apprenticeship that starts in the fall of 2017. Any opinions on it?

Go for whichever has the most money to be earned at the end off it. There's quite a bit of money to be earned in steel working though.

Why not become a surveyor then? Try and get an apprentice in that sort of field if you can?

Doesn't hurt to try new things, you can always stop doing it when you choose to.

A trade is always better to know than retail in my opinion. Reason being is because if poverty strikes you, you know something. You can offer more than bagging clothing.
