I'll decipher the laws for you that were linked. I don't know why in the hell DFW has to make it so difficult to read their rules and regulations.

So first off, archery or firearm? If you're in the North zone the season is from November 5th to January 1st. The South zone is from November 5th to January 15th. Brooks, Kenedy, Kleberg, and Willacy Counties are from November 5th to February 26th. Check out the map below to see what zone you're in.



You still qualify as a youth hunter (lucky bastard) so your permit is only $7. MAKE SURE they know you're 15. Usually they'll ask for your social security number when you go to buy your permit so they should know but if it's over $7 tell them you're a youth so you're stamp exempt. This permit is called the upland game bird endorsement (if you're hunting with a bow make sure to specify archery hunting).

The only thing required of you to hunt is your permit, and hunter safety card. You don't have to have the card to buy the permit, but it does have to be on you when you hunt encase a DFW cop stops you. I've been stopped many times even been caught willingly trespassing (I shot a deer and it ran into another persons posted property) and they never asked for my card. You can get away with not having one, if they ask for it tell them that they didn't ask for it when you bought your permit so you had no idea. You'll get off with a warning but you had better quit your hunt at that point. I'm in Washington so DFW cops may be more stringent down in Texas, but usually it's the same protocol as a cop, hunting permit and ID. If you have not done hunter safety you do have to do it to hunt but like I said you are usually alright without it but I would take the class regardless. The one I took had some great information.

No hunter orange is required while hunting on private property, but it is recommended. Public hunting lands require 400 square inches of daylight florescent orange with 144 square inches appearing on both chest and back, and daylight florescent orange headwear must be worn. That's to be legal, but if you just wear a hunter orange jacket or construction orange jacket (same thing), you're alright without headwear as it is usually over 400 square inches.

One of the biggest things is to make sure you're in legal shooting hours. Shooting hours are a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset. I would recommend getting to your location at least a half hour before shooting hours to get your breathing under control and let the environment settle down before you can shoot. Another big thing is absolutely NO SHOOTING from a vehicle or within 100 feet of a vehicle or public roadway, this is highly illegal.
