I want to swap my hard drive is there anyway to do it without an external hard drive such as putting my new hard drive into my PlayStation and restore straight from my old hard drive?

Unfortunately you can't use an external hdd as the main drive for a PS4. So you need to open the PS4 drive which is really easy, then insert your intended hard drive. The catch, is you need to redownload the system software, which can be downloaded off Playstation's website.

I would look on YouTube for a full guide.
