Elon Musk the CEO of SpaceX has applied for government permission to launch satellites that will provide global broadband internet access.

SpaceX is not just the only company trying to do this, several other companies are also considering this. With SpaceX being able to fly to space already, it's looking very promising for the future.

In a statement, the firm said: "Once fully deployed, the SpaceX system will pass over virtually all parts of the Earth's surface and therefore, in principle, have the ability to provide ubiquitous global service."
The satellites would orbit the planet at altitudes ranging from 714 to 823 miles (1,150 to 1,325 km). That is above the International Space Station but below geostationary satellites.

Elon Musk has got to be my icon, absolute legend! He is that much of a legend Robert Downey Jr who plays the character Tony Stark in Iron Man based the character on him!

He was also the brains behind sending the first rocket up to space and landing it back on earth so the rocket can be reused.

This year he also announced he is going to colonise mars with his process called interplanetary systems, this would involve sending rockets to mars then sending the back to earth to fuel up and take the next lot of passengers.

If you have $200,000 you can be one of the first people to go, I would 100% be going personally!!

I doubt they would have asked for permission if it weren't possible to do physically but socially this seems impossible.

Consider that countries like China block access to certain websites by co-operating with the internet providers in China. What would they do now if everyone can connect to Broadband? Ask Elon Musk to deny access to websites in China?
Even if Elon Musk would accept this proposal, how would he make it only deny service to those websites from China if it's all running through the same satellite? Wouldn't he have to deny access to everyone?

North Korea doesn't seem like a country which would sit quietly while its residents have unprecedented access to non-propagandist websites.

That being said, I am not a computer expert and I would hope that SpaceX has considered every angle of doing something like this.

I mean, which Government has he applied for permission from? Assuming it's the US wouldn't he have to get permission from every country before doing something like this?

Totally agree with you, I trust in his judgement to be honest he isn't that stupid to do stuff like this.

He was seen at the Pentagon early this year, but yeah world leaders will have their say.
