Always 144hz, once you use it, standard monitors feel choppy and horrid

Depends on what you like to do.

If you play games that can utilize the 144hz like CS:GO and BF1, then I would go for the 144hz monitor. It truly does make an insane difference in these games and enhances the experience.

However, if you do not play fps games and you work with editing or non-gaming related work, ultrawide is the way to go.

I, personally, had a 144hz monitor (dual monitor setup with another 60hz) when I was big into CS:GO and loved it. A few months ago I stopped playing fps games and traded it in both my monitors for an ultrawide and I have not looked back. It is amazing and I have no problem utilizing the extra real estate.

TL:DR; if you play fps games a lot, 144hz. If you do work/editing a lot, ultrawide.

Haha trouble is I use my computer for a lot of fps games and a lot of work/productivity. Shame I can't afford a 144hz ultra wide!

BenQ have an Ultra wide 144hz monitor on Black Friday for £399.99, might be worth the extra £50 if you can - [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

You could get a nice 4k monitor in budget;

If you wanted to go ultrawide, you could get this 75Hz monitor;

Ultrawide is great for some games. Some games like Call of Duty just stretch to fit though. GTA V on the other hand is pretty epic IMO. You can get the 29" version for an extra £100 but I wouldn't personally spend that much for it.

You could get a decent 75Hz 1440p monitor in budget;

If you really want 100Hz+, you're stuck with 1080p and TN. In which case, I'd just find the extra £50 for this;

I've had a look around and decided to up my budget to about 400-450 instead.

I'm thinking of either of these two:

  • 27"
  • LED / TN
  • 144Hz (Overclock to 170Hz)

  • 27" Curved
  • VA
  • 144Hz
  • G-Sync
