His editing will eventually get better trust me people will eventually oc if not now later my dad overclocks and he just does basic stuff.

Not everyone overclocks, I only know a few people do. Some people will use it but it's highly unlikely that everyone will overclock. As for editing, he may just be doing occasional rendering of home movies. If not then I got that part wrong.

Motherboard is good but no Raid support Idk if he wants to use it but if he does this will not work.

cline wrote here's something I threw together real quick. Tried to get as close to $1,000 as possible. Pretty solid build, similar to my own.

here it is: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

OP stated he won't be overclocking or doing serious editing/rendering, so an unlocked i7 makes zero sense. No SSD? Last generation GPU, and with a blower style cooler? Also what a crappy PSU for a $1k system.

RevoThePlug wrote Kind of like clines build except you can live with a 6600k and Modular Power Supply a ssd andtiny bit better Gpu you do not need a 6700k trust me unless you are doing heavy editing I have a 6600k in my dads pc and it does just fine and friend has 6700k and kills what he is doing if you had the extra money i would say 6700k but for you this should be fine and I gave the overclocking option because it can help a little with rendering.

Over priced, ugly cooler. Terrible quality PSU. Again, OP stated that he won't be overclocking so an unlocked CPU is unnecessary. Also bad SSD. At least this one has an SSD at all though I guess.

Getting better but paying $70 for a H110 chipset motherboard doesn't make any sense. PSU isn't great, but better than the previous two. Really no need for a Cryorig H7 with a locked CPU, an M9i would be plenty and is almost half the price, only real reason for the H7 would be aesthetics I guess. GTX 1070 isn't necessary unless OP is gaming at greater than 1080p resolution.

RevoThePlug wrote His editing will eventually get better trust me people will eventually oc if not now later my dad overclocks and he just does basic stuff.

Not up to you. He has stated that he has no interest in overclocking, and that's fine. Not everyone overclock, and if he does change his mind in the future, he can upgrade to an unlocked CPU if he wants. Or, he could just use a Z170 chipset motherboard with an old BIOS and overclock a locked CPU.

L11 wrote Cline's build looks fine to me except the GPU. Why would you want to buy a GPU from last generation?

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Has an SSD with newer graphics card.

Again, OP is not overclocking. Unlocked CPU isn't necessary, I'd rather save the $40. Also what were you thinking with that PSU? It's good, but an EVGA 550W G2 is fully modular instead of semi, gold rated instead of bronze and is $10 cheaper.

OP-
An i5 will be fine most likely. If you're doing a lot of editing/rendering in programs that utilise more cores/threads, then it would probably be worth moving some stuff around to get an i7 within budget.

If you want to overclock the CPU, buy an i5-6400 instead of the 6500. If you're not overclocking for the foreseeable future, get the 6500. If you're not going to overclock, you can get a Cryorig M9i instead of the H7 and save $15. XFire support so you can add a 2nd GPU in the future if you want. Alternative motherboard choice;

The AsRock mobo has USB 3.1 and an m.2 port, the Z170-A Pro only has an m.2 port. The MSI looks better IMO. I'd get the MSI mobo unless you specifically want USB 3.1.
