Hello all!
I have just been thinking for some time about this topic. So much so that I am writing a dissertation on this. The topic of "gaming causing crime" is quite controversial, but the link between "virtual reality gaming" and crime or increased aggression hasn't been explored much. I would like to know your thoughts.
I do have a fairly short survey on this, that I will be using to write my dissertation ( [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] ), which would help me massively (obviously I get no financial gain from this) but I am generally interested to see what people (namely the gaming community) think of this topic, so if you can't do this then no worries!
Basically, my thought behind this is, as immersion in a game increases, the emotive response can also then increase, and therefore impact aggressive behaviour more - and from there increase crime. This is just a theory, and I am aware that the link between gaming and aggression/crime is strongly debatable, so what do you think?
Thanks all!

I guess it depends on the content they're playing.
That goes w/ any type of gaming content.

I'd have to disagree. If you have a conscious and and can tell right from wrong then it won't affect you in that way. But if you have some kind of illness that makes it hard for you to tell right from wrong then it might do something to you but I don't think vr really immerses you.

So, if the gamer was playing something like, for example, a highly graphic game, then the individual would be more likely to get involved in more aggressive (or even criminal) behaviour, when compared to playing a less graphic game?

If then, theoretically, that virtual reality became so immersing that you could feel everything what was virtually around you (albeit this is looking very far ahead), do you not think that, as it gets harder to distinguish between the virtual and real world, more people will start to copy the graphic nature of some games?
Or do you think that, no matter how far advanced/immersing the virtual world becomes, most people will be able to tell the difference?

How come you disagree? Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to make virtual reality out to be some crime causing monster. I just find it interesting.

Disagree, Unless you are already violent and a phsycopath who wants to go around killing people then it cant. It does not say in the game "Go out and kill people" therefore it cant be the game that causes someone to be violent, Yeah rage maybe but not cause them to physically kill someone
