I wouldn't doubt if during that waiting period, he tries to have some sort of retrial or some other bullshit to try and ease things on his punishment, if not try and avoid death at all.

Not sure when Americans stopped doing death by firing squad, but I believe his case would be enough to bring it back for him alone. Better than wasting tax payer money for the inevitable time he will be spending before being put to death. That or just put him in general population prisons since they were waiting for him, problem would be solved quickly.

Death penalty cases do cost more money than life imprisonment, but the common response to that is "Just shoot him in the head then."
