An SSD is not absolutely necessary, but if you have the money it is definitely worth it.

An SSD should always be used to install your operating system on. Doing this makes your computer start up in just a few seconds. Also, if you have large game files, such as GTAV, Battlefield 1, then installing them on an SSD makes them load a lot quicker. If your current HDD is old and needs to be replaced, I would recommend you get just a 120GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD. You can install your OS on the SSD and any large games you might want to play. For everything else, throw it on the HDD.

They are very reliable and will last you many years to come, as long as you purchase a reputable one like Samsung or SanDisk.
Last note: STAY AWAY FROM SSHD (Hybrid SSD/HDD Combo)

Get an SSD for your OS and get a HDD for your data storage.

Just get a small 128GB SSD for the OS.
You don't need to have your software & games installed on an SSD unless you want the high performance and have the money for the storage.

Don't get a 120 or 128GB SSD as suggested above. They're terrible value now. 240-256GB is the minimum I'd get since theyre just much better value, and are still fairly cheap(though price has increased almost 50% for certain SSDs in the last 2 months). 480-512GB SSD's are the best value right now but they're starting to creep back in to unreasonable pricing territory. As for HDD, anything less than 1TB is terrible value. 2TB drives are more than enough for the majority of people and are the best value for HDD's IMO. You should be able to keep using your current HDD for now, add an SSD to the system and then you can add another HDD later, when you have some more money or whatever.
