Current parts:
CPU: i7 4790k
CPU COOLER: Cooler master 212 EVO
MOBO: MSI Gaming z97 gaming 5
RAM: 16gb ddr3 ripjawz 1600hz
GRAPHICS: Windforce GTX 970
3 ssd's and a hard drive(windows is on one of the ssd's)
CASE: Fractal design define r5 black with window

I'm heading to college in the fall and would like to upgrade a few parts before I go, I have $600 saved up, my monitors are good I don't want to replace them. I was thinking either upgrade cpu and motherboard or just upgrade my graphics card when the gtx 1080ti or whatever comes out if it does this summer/fall. Any suggestions are appreciated.

What's the resolution and refresh rate on your current monitors?

1920x1080 I have two of them 60hz refresh rate 2ms response time, they do the job I really don't want to spend the money I have on new monitors because I'm noticing that I can't max out games anymore. I know I could spend the $600 on a 4K 1ms gaming monitor but I'm looking to upgrade the pc itself.

You can definitely max out games at 1080p with an i7 and GTX 970. CPU upgrade would be totally illogical and any GPU upgrade would be a waste for 1080p.

A 970 would have a hard time playing 4k with decent settings, if i were you i'd get an AIO cooler and a higher refresh rate 1080p monitor. If you could include a pcpartpicker link i could see how the airflow is with your computer

X62 is a waste of money. The only reason to spend the $40/$50 premium would be literally for the LEDs. Also a higher refresh rate 1080p monitor would be stupid since you've shown zero interest in higher refresh rate, and a GTX 970 isn't going to be any good for beyond 1080p60 really, other than for games like CSGO obviously.

1440p PLS panel, so it's already better than that $270 PoS above, but the QX2710's are also known to overclock great, many people push them to 100-120Hz easily so that would be a much wiser purchase considering it's cheaper, and better. The QX2710 is probably what I'd recommend for you, and a CPU cooler upgrade, but there's zero need to spend $160 for a new cooler. GTX 970 will let you play at 1440p comfortably for the most part, but you can turn down the settings/resolution if necessary.
