Something I have noticed in game sequels that have come out is that they're drifting away from their original formula/source. Don't know what I mean?

For example Halo 1-Reach have been consistent in gameplay and story. New things have been added to each title but all of them feel similar; feels like Halo. With Halo 5, I think it's nothing like the previous titles.

Currents games I've seen this with are Resident Evil, Dead Rising, Call of Duty, Mafia, etc. Now, I haven't played the newest titles of these games, but I want to know what some of you guys think.

Do you think a redirection of a game is necessary in order to grow? Or do you think that games should stick to the same formula?

it isn't my personal preference that it continues i did like the older versions of halo no doubt, but I've said it before on cod rants. As time progresses, games will and everything else will.

But this is something i can relate to.

Developers have learned they can push a game to be like all of the hits and make big money. Fallout is a first person shooter now. They removed the RPG elements. Halo now has ADS and mounting, much like CoD. CoD now has space and jetpacks. Devs are trying to reach bigger audiences

No, the people that market these things think they have to put in all these new features because thats what the community says we want but then we get those features and go oh man this isnt the same game anymore even though thats what we asked for. What companies really should be doing(at least some like halo and cod) should be using the same old formula but just improve it, get us some new maps a little variation between games etc... not add a bunch of bull.

Saints Row is the best example of this that I can think of.

Saints Row 1 was bordering on realistic, 2 was a bit more crazy and then 3 and 4 just jumped the shark.
That's probably because they thought they were copying GTA but I still think the first two Saints Rows were the best.

Well GTA hasn't went balls to the wall unrealistic yet honestly they have managed to keep a very realistic / semi logical vibe across 4/5. Saint's row has always had that goofed feel to it, a fair comparison for modern day cods could be the old need for speeds, underground - MWBE were the unrealistic then when it came to prostreet the semi realism was great especially for the release time.

Another example of game advancements is halo such as OP said regardless they changed the franchise so much after reach.

They have ruined what was once great games.

Socom - Stealth is gone
Splinter Cell - Same
Need For Speed - Online only crap
Battlefront - More like Battlefield now

Why ruin a good thing and what made us fans of that series in the first place? Ridiculous!

Stick to the same formula. One reason why I stopped with Halo 5 was that it doesn't feel like the old titles.

That's the problem though, it's not really the developers but the community. CoD people back in MW3 and somewhat BO2 were getting tired of the same old gameplay, which apparently was boots on the ground. After Advanced Warfare came out after Ghosts, it was now futuristic, no more boots on the ground and now the community is all over the place. People want boots on the ground again, when before they were complaining about how it was becoming repetitive. I don't know how frequently Halo is released, probably not yearly, but that situation was probably the same with the community as it was with CoD. Sega is another great example with the Sonic Adventure series. A lot of the Sega community was bitching and complaining about there being too many characters to play as, too much side distractions (Chao Garden) and during the first Sonic Adventure game some people complained about the open world aspect. Sega scrapped the open world concept for Sonic Adventure 2 but kept pretty much everything else. Then the community started complaining about no open world aspect and about previous issues. Sega once again listened to them with Sonic 06 - which could be called Sonic Adventure 3 in a way - brought back open world, reduced the character roster to 3 with minor side hero quests, removed non-story related side options, missions were added for grinding purposes and everyone complained it was the worst game they've ever made. It was glitched out and buggy yes, but others were complaining about more than that. Sega finally stopped giving a shit what people say and went on to do their own games how they want which have been fairly good in reviews and now the community is crying again for Sonic Adventure 3 like the first 2 were.
