Hi Guys,

So I've finally passed my test, and I've started to look at cars, I've managed to get quite a bit saved and I'm willing to spend £15,000 of it on the car itself.

I've been looking at BMW 1 series, Mercedes A-Class, Ford Zetec S Ecoboost.
VW Polo GTI. - But I'm still no sure on which direction to go in.

The thing that sucks if that as it's my first year of driving I'll have to get a black box installed to keep the insurance reasonable

So which cars would you recommend looking at?

Bare in mind any recommendations must be reasonable on insurance ( I'm 18 & First time driver )

Since you passed your test, unless you live off your parents funds then put Mercedes & BMW's in the bin.

The Fiestas & Polos will be much cheaper. The cost to repair BMW's in comparison to Fiestas & Polos is quite a big difference, this will have an impact on your insurance. Some insurers might even say no to insuring you completely.

Polo GTi's only come in 1.8 litre engines too. You need to take some of these into consideration or you'll be paying the cars value for insurance almost.

So my personal recommendation would be a Fiesta Zetec S Red Edition. That comes with a 1.0L turbocharged eco boost engine.

Even with a black box installed I can still see them cars being extortionate for a first time driver, best thing to do imo is buy something cheap that you will be able to get a years no claims on, then after that look at purchasing a new car

+1 on what the guy above said.

Don't feel the need to spend 15k on your first car because you'll be too nervous driving it.

I daily one of these bad lads

Most people buy shit boxes for their first car, it's so fun you don't need to worry so much about it.

But ofc if you want to spend that much, that's fine just be wise with the insurance and do lots of quotes.

First of all thanks for your response!

Haha, Nah it's not my parent's funds, but I was thinking that Most of them are around 12-14k for a nice spec model, and I was humming and arriving about whether it's worth it for a first car. I was getting quotes of around £1,400 to £1,650 for insurance on the Mercs and BMW.

With the fords is it worth doing a 3 years option on it or just buying one that's around 13-15 plate, because with the red editions, I've noticed the price depreciates like hell.

Thanks for the feedback!

And lol the only problem with cars of that age is for some reason my insurance goes up to like £2,500, really not worth it considering you can pick the cars up for like £1,000.

Just look for something you like and look up common problems with them.

I don't know about where you live, but in the US a BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, etc. will be extremely expensive to fix and things will go wrong with any car you get.

Im 19, I was in the same boat as you this time last year.

I would throw the idea of Mercs & BMWs out the window, its self explanatory.

Go for a simple starter like a Ford Fiesta or VW Polo or Vauxhall Astra.

I have a Fiesta Zetec S S1600 (limited edition) at the moment. Getting a Fiesta ST-2 soon.

I'm 20, driving about 1 year 8 months and my insurance is £90 a month currently.

Brilliant car, very reliable and very nice to drive.

Nice whip man. 118bhp? Do you have a blackbox cos £90/month is mega cheap.

I had a 2004 VW Polo as my first car!

I now have a 2016 Seat Leon FR and its good. I'm 19, been driving for just over 12 months now and my insurance is £242/month on it, no black box.
