What's the best $300 laptop for school use? Preferably a smaller screen size for easy mobility.

For school use? I mean there are plenty of options. People think $300 and think it is about pure power, and or what is inside.
You can easily swap the HDD out in this for a SSD in the future, and or a just a bigger 2.5 drive.

For the price you are not murdering your bank, and sure there are options on newegg for the $120 one i think. I have the exact same one, and just run ubuntu since linux is in general lighter then windows, and can perform most tasks of a windows machine. If you are planning on any real "gaming" run indies that is about all you will get away with.
EDIT: Do mind you it comes with a shitty resolution, which while bad, USB DP/VGA monitors are a thing, and could cost you a bit over $300.

I'd just get a chrome book if your budget is that low.

Chrome books are not that bad, you can swap out some components for a better experience and dual booting once you are out of developer mode is a flash.
