Online applications make the hiring process so much easier and straight to the point. They don't have time for that bologna.

But think about it, you're applying for a retail position. I'm not trying to be a dick, I personally work in a grocery store right now so don't think I'm shitting on that. But you really don't need any special skills or anything. They just need a few questions answered to make sure you aren't brain dead. You don't need to stand out with a resume because it's not that kind of job. You most likely won't be some vital piece in the retail machine, at least off the bat. They just want to make sure you are a normal person and if they're hiring they'll contact you.

Online applications have a small chance of being hired through them. When you show interest and are actively looking to get that job thats when they come to you.

True.
Even calling the job a few days after applying just to check for a application status will show them you are more than interested.

I feel employers don't look at online applications.

I have never received a reply from an online application.
IMO they're a waste of time, go into the workplace and apply in person.

I applied once online, then stopped by and tracked a manager down to shake his hand and let him know I put an application in. I got called in for an interview either later that day or within a day.
You have to use some common sense when there's an online app, but I wouldn't say it's hard to be hired through them by any means.
