The title says it all I know when Intel releases these in like 2014. So how much longer will this be able to max out my games. I can run just about everything I play maxes out with my 970 soon to be a 1080ti and my 4690k but it's now 3 years old and I feel like games will soon demand more. I'm probably never gonna go for an I7 and just stick with i5s though.

It's really good still, you shouldn't have to upgrade for a few years depending on your gaming preference. If you can upgrade I'd get 6-8 cores but it's not really necessary as 4 cores is a good amount right now as well as your processor speed.

i can afford an i7 but see i just got a new mobo for my i5 like a month or two ago so i could OC my i5 to 4ghz. and i wouldnt exactly want a 4790k if i were to get an i7 i would want a 7700k and that would require a RAM and mobo change too soon in my opinion.

Yeah, there's literally no need to change at the moment. I'd probably only upgrade in about 2-3 years.

No idea. Intel could release cannon Lake in a year with vastly superior IPC. It's still perfectly time for the time being. 4 cores with no hyper threading is pretty lackluster in certain games but an unlocked i5 is still going to be fine. People are still rocking 2nd gen i5s without issue. For the most part, GPU is much more important. Watch Dogs 2 and Cities Skylines are two examples of games that heavily utilise more than 4 cores/threads.

Assuming you're gaming at 1080p, a GTX 1080Ti is an absolutely ridiculous idea. Even a GTX 1070 is more than enough for 1080p.

Well my plan here is to buy my 1080ti sell my 970 around like $200-$250 and maybe put a little more money into for an LG ultra wide 4K but I'm not gonna be able to afford both at once.

Buy the monitor then the GPU. No point buying a GPU that you're not going to get use out of. You're also expecting too much for your GTX 970. They've been selling for as little as $150. You should be able to get $180 for it pretty easily but no way you get more than $200 for it unless you find a real sucker.

I feel that I could get some use out of the 1080ti vs my 970 at 1080p. I play games like rainbow six Witcher fallout watch dogs and games like that. My PC has a difficult time running watch dogs and doesn't max out most games at 1080p 60fps I struggle with bf1 most though. Some games these days want the 1060 6gb model.

If you're struggling to at BF1 at 1080p, something else is the issue because a GTX 970 doesn't struggle with BF1 at 1080p. You also should not have any issues in any of the other titles you mentioned, other than The Witcher 3. I don't know if you're talking about Watch Dogs 1 or 2, but if it's Watch Dogs 2, your CPU is holding you back, not GPU. If it's Watch Dogs 1, you shouldn't be having any issue. A $700+ GPU is not logical for a 1080p monitor. You're going to get more use out of getting a new monitor first.
