The Godfather 2

Platform: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Microsoft Windows
Genre: Action-Adventure
Release Date: April 7, 2009
Developer: EA Redwood Shores
Publisher: Electronic Arts

Synopsis

In 1955, Michael Corleone has moved his family to Lake Tahoe, Nevada, leaving Aldo Trapani as his underboss and proxy in New York. Michael's ultimate ambition is to go legitimate, via Nevada's lucrative gambling trade and a business enterprise in Cuba with Hyman Roth, and give his caporegimes the opportunity to form their own families

Gameplay

The Godfather 2's gameplay is very similar to the first (The Godfather). It's action packed and always keeping you on the edge of you're seat, you're never bored when playing this amazing game! The start of the campaign kicks off with an exciting gun battle in a rebellious Cuba of 1958. This mission teases some of the upcoming action to come, which really hook's you straight from the start. The style of the game and the way the camera is controlled is very similar to The Godfather, meaning it's easy to play through both games without struggling to learn the controls for each different game.

When playing the campaign you begin to think that you can predict what's going to happen next, I can tell you for a fact. You will not. The style that EA took when developing the game makes you never know what's coming around this corner, gameplay is action filled and full to the brim with surprise, making the game even more enjoyable. When compared to The Godfather the game is much much longer as there are 3 stages in the game. New York, Florida & Cuba. You can switch between these 3 locations any time, simply by visiting the airport. The game is more of a challenge when compared to the original as you have to protect your businesses that are in the other locations. Personally for me, the harder the game is the better it is!

Plot

The game is set 4 year after Aldo's death (The Godfather) and the game starts off with a meeting between the Corleone family and its rivals (which are different from the Original game). You play as Dominic Corleone and as the game is set at the time of the Cuban revoloution you are left to protect Micheal Corleone when things don't go to plan. You have to safely transport Micheal from the meeting to the airfield, whilst battling through waves of Cuban Rebels.

Later on the game is set in 1958 New York, the Corleone capo's Tony & Carmine Rosato (Known as the Rosato brother's) break away from the Family and proceed to build there own which rivals the Corleone family. Dominic is then given the task to recruit some of his own men and to fight against Carmine Rosato and his men to regain control of New York. After Dominic weakens Carmine, he is called to a meeting which he attends with Frank Pentangeli. The meeting turns out to be a trap and Frank is murder by one of Carmine's men. After you escape you proceed to take more of Carmine's rackets, eventually capturing them all. You are you're crew then invade the Carmine Family compound and blow it up. Eliminating Carmine Rosato & His men once and for all.

You are then flew over to Florida, Miami. You are greeted by Hymen Roth, who gives you a very nice 'safe house' to use whilst you stay in Florida. Hymen then asks for a favour, he needs you to rescue Steven Ciccoricco who has been taken by the Granado's family. Dominic does the favour for Hymen Roth & gains his and Fredo's trust. Micheal is in contact shortly after, to which he tells you to attack Tony Rosato (Carmine Rosato's brother). Dominic sets out attacking Tony's businesses and eliminating his 'made-men'. Eventually Dominic eliminates them from good at their Family compound. Shortly after Don Samuele Mangano moves his organisation over to Miami, Dominic chooses wisely and offers to ally with Don Mangano, to which he agree's. A few hour's later Dominic meets Fredo for a drink in their safehouse, to which an attempt is made on their Live's with a drive-by shooting. Assuming it to be the Mangano family Dominic breaks the alliance with Don Mangano. Later Dominic gains access to the Mangano compound and takes it over with his crew.

Hours later Don Mangano is in contact with Dom, he say's that the attack was not due to him & that they need to meet. Dominic attends the meeting to which he is greeted by Paulo Riccitello (Mangano's Consigliere). Paulo then assaults Dom and the game cuts to a cut-scene. Showing the Mangano's brutality towards the Corleone family, in total 6 rackets are taken from Dominic. Fredo then tells Dom to meet Hymen Roth and have a chat. Hymen Roth introduces Dominic to CIA Agent Henry Mitchell. This is significant later on in the game.

Dominic is sent to Cuba where he is tasked to Kill Fidel Castro, which fails. The authorities are alerted of this attempted assassination and Dominic is a wanted man. It is speculated that Hymen Roth was working with a rival family to have Dominic caught and killed by Fidel Castro, to aid the Corleone's rival families.

Dominic finally returns back to New York, where he learns Frank is actually alive. & ready to testify against Micheal Corleone with the CIA Backing him. Dominic then has to manipulate a high ranking senator to stop Frank from testifying. Later on it comes to air that Hymen Roth was behind the whole thing. Dominic then sets out to assassinate Hymen. The assassination goes to plan & Hymen is dead. Later Micheal congratulates Dominic and calls him the Godfather. The game then cut's to a cut-scene and ends with the credits.

Graphics

When compared to the original Godfather game the graphics are amazing. They are a huge improvement and really bring the game to life. The physics is much more realistic and the developers paid attention to detail, little things like shooting glass actually trigger the glass to shatter where as in the original the effects were very bad. However, the game was released back in 2009, so it is to be expected that graphics aren't on the same level as some of today's games. Yet, the graphics are still pretty impressive. Even when played now

Controls

With the controls being basically identical to the original it means its very easy to binge play both games, as there's no drastic changes which make it hard to play. Some controls like running are still the same, which could have been toggled to be more suitable, but having it the same as it was makes it much easier to play straight after The Godfather.

I loved this game! I think I will say I like the first one more. What I hate about the game is it's so hard to rob a bank.

I've never played these games before, but The Godfather movies were amazing. This game seems like it has familiar exciting gameplay. Even though it's old, it's from EA's golden era. Great review man.
