So, I've had this mentioned to me before but with ASUS's STRIX 1080TI apparently right around the corner, I want some insight about which is going to be better for 4k.

Right now I'm using the 1070 STRIX OC edition for both in SLI. Haven't had a problem with it running 4k, however there are some games out there that either don't support SLI, the performance gain is minuscule (most recent being NieR Automata only giving a 2-3 FPS increase with SLI, but other users are complaining about not being able to run the game on 1080p with a 960m, 960 or 970 so I'll give that game a pass as possible porting issues.) With other games actually getting worse FPS on SLI. I know most people want to stick by the rule of "a single good card will always be better than 2 weaker cards," but I'm trying to plan ahead for future games and whether or not SLI will suffer with them or not. If I opt for a new GPU, I'm doing a whole new build again, which has always been a thing with me. Money is not the issue with jumping ship right now, I am eventually going to get a 1080TI but I would rather wait for the x299 to drop first and then jump into a brand new build. However, if a 1080TI will offer better performance for games on 4k over 1070 SLI, then I'll opt for that quickly. I know the 1080TI STRIX isn't out yet so it's speed and performance can't exactly be concrete but basing a little off the 1080TI out now, when compared to the 1070 STRIX in SLI, which would be better for 4K?

The reason this is bugging me a lot is because when the 980TI came out, I already had 970 2-way SLI and a lot of people on Skype and Steam kept saying to get a 3-way SLI 970, even though I kind of figured it wouldn't matter when compared to the 980TI because not a lot of games would support 3-way SLI, I still caved in and that was the biggest mistake I made, I could not run a majority of my games on 1440p without terrible screen tearing or overall performance tanking hard. That whole issue is what is bugging me going forward now with SLI 1070 vs 1080TI.

Edit: Current specs in case this matters.

i7-5820k @ 3.80 GHz (overclocked from 3.30 GHz)
32GB DDR4 Corsair LPX RAM at 2666MHz | 4x8GB to utilize the dual channel on my motherboard
ASUS ROG Rampage V EDITION 10 Motherboard
EVGA Super NOVA 850w G2

1080Ti would be the better option but I'd definitely say hold on to the SLI 1070s for now. SLI 1070s will definitely last you a while and it'd be better for you to wait for X299 IMO since you said you'd probably upgrade to that anyway. Then you could grab an X299 mobo, CPU, and 1080Ti. X299 shouldn't be far off.

Going back to this, ASUS is looking strong for clock speeds on their 1080 TI. Curious what the other aftermarket cards will be clocking in more specifically Zotac and Gigabyte. Seeing how I am going to wait until x299, it gives me room before jumping onto the STRIX as soon as I was originally thinking.
