no you dont need a vpn have used a retail and my rgh online same time and rgh got banned and retail wasnt also havent seen anyone DDOSing after the xb1 compat got added no one does it anymore

It's smarter to use a VPN than not, because if you have retails connected to the same IP as your RGH it's not 100% that you'll not receive a ban on the retail to, that happens to a lot of people.

I would not want to end up IP flagged and paying for KVs twice as often ,
But Im pretty sure I can unplug mine for a minute and it resets

the only reason you should use a VPN on your RGH/JTAG is to drop Retail Bans and being kicked offline, people say it's not needed yes of course it's not needed, although it helps you in the long run, as eventually you will get a retail ban it happens to the best of us, they'll eventually flag the IP and ban all consoles related to it, THEY do not hand out IP bans anymore, at least from the research I did, it's way more safe to run a VPN on your RGH whilst playing due to it hiding your IP from players and Microsoft, most good stealth servers will spoof your MAC so that's also hidden ( Ninja Does this ) I don't know any others, but yes you should use VPN.
