Hey guys, I figured I'd go over my EDC (every day carry) knives as I know some of you are trying to find the next best knife.

I'll just start where I started buying quality knives. I used to always buy the hardware store $2 special knife but those are just cheap pieces of crap. I started off my "good" knife collection when I was probably 14 or 15 when I bought a Benchmade knife. I'm not sure what it was but it was a damn good knife before I lost it. I spent like $250 on it so after that I just said I won't buy a knife more expensive than $100.

My grandpa gave us grandkids a carbon steel old timer brand knife with the 3 (clip, spey, and sheepsfoot) blades. This was my EDC for quite a while because of the steel. Most knives today are made of stainless steel but these are made of carbon steel. Carbon steel is a lot easier to sharpen and holds an edge forever. The only downfall is that they rust. With normal knife care this isn't an issue so that's why I always had one.

I ended up getting tired of those knifes as it's a little bit of a process to open them. My dad gave me his uncle Henry Bearpaw which is a badass knife. This thing is made of really good quality parts which unfortunately means it's also super heavy (literally feels like a block of lead). It held a decent edge but I think my dad messed it up when he got it as it is really hard to sharpen and it's just a general stainless steel. Right about this time I started traveling and my EDC went from being a tool to strip wires or dig out splinters to being self defense weapon. This knife doesn't have a thumb assist so it takes 2 hands to open so it was on the search for a new knife.

I ended up finding a Buck knife in my drawer that I think my uncle gave me as a Christmas present. I used this as an EDC up until today because it was easy to deploy 1 handed, really light, and easy to sharpen. It didn't hold the best edge but I didn't use it much anyways so it didn't bother me (It holds an edge a lot better than the cheapo knives though).

Yesterday I was working for an old customer of mine and I broke my rule number 3, always carry a knife. I asked them for a blade to cut the plastic and they handed me a razor that was the same dimensions as a regular knife, but the blades were replaceable and really sharp (a razor). I had to get one so I went to the store and looked at knives and realized there's a few different replaceable blade knives lol. I bought the Havalon Piranta Z as it's a pretty small knife with a normal length blade and is really light. So far this knife has done everything I've asked it to (in ~3 hours I've owned it) and the blade can still shave my hair. I paid $49 (that's tax included) for it and it came with the knife, a sheath, and 12 replacement blades (plus 1 on the knife handle). Replacement blades are 12 for $10. There are also different styles of blades you can buy (surgical, hunting, fillet, etc.) as well as you can buy other things like a saw blade or a gut hook that go right on it. That's all the positives I can tell you as of now on it. For the negatives, I have a huge problem with the sheath. It does hold 12 blades and the knife alright, but they decided to embroider it. On the outside there is white and bright orange on a black case so it's very obvious you have a knife. Not only that but the embroidery is crap. I'll always carry it my pocket so that doesn't bother me so much. Next is the locking system. The locks that are a bent piece of metal in the middle are terrible locks. I break every single one I've had and this one utilizes that idea. Next up is the handle. It doesn't have a bridge in the back so when the knife is folded, you can see the edge through the back. This is bad because any dirt that gets in your pocket can take that edge off pretty fast, same thing if you drop it in dirt. Either way, I bought it for a reason so we'll see if this lasts to become my actual EDC!

And just for a tip, always buy decent knives. Don't buy a cheap knife because it looks cool or it looks tactical. Frost cutlery has some cool knives but they are really meant to be wall hangers and not actually used. Next up for sharpening, USE A STONE. A grinder can take off too much too fast, and one of those hand held things you run the knife though is meant to touch up the edge if you're in the middle of skinning an animal or something. They put a super steep edge on your blade and actually ruin it if you use that to sharpen your knife.

With that said, what's your EDC knife?
