Hi guys. I bought an alienware i7 steam machine a little while back so I could experience some games that I cant play on console. I know nothing about pc so I had my friend install windows 7 to it since i didnt care for the steam os. After a little while the alienware stopped working properly and would get these 5 blinking yellow lights of death.
It was still under warranty so I shipped it dell and they pretty much replaced the whole thing. I got it back and went through the windows set up and it turns out they put windows 8.1 on it. After a little of working fine now its saying that my license is invalid.
My question is what in peoples experiences is the best windows os to run on a steam machine and How do I go about getting a license key or upgrade for my current windows. I dont have a disk drive to work with otherwise I would just go buy one so I'm a little stuck. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place or if its a dumb question but I'm fairly lost when it comes to anything pc. Thanks in advance for any help.

I recommend Windows 10 to everyone looking to game now as Windows 7 is just plain bad and old at this point. Window 10 is everything 7 was but better.
You can install any operating system you feel like using a nifty little tool called Rufus to make bootable flash drives. The only requirements are a flash drive 8GB should be good and the Windows 10 ISO file which you can download from Microsofts website.
Rufus - [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Windows ISO - [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
When you are installing it will ask for a key. There are various places you can buy a legit key such as Newegg or Amazon.
If you aren't gaming at all I recommend moving to a Linux distro as they are lightweight and will help you get more out of your system.
