who else agrees that consumers is the subject and their is the answer? 11 people agree with me including an English teacher but 3 other people disagree with me including the people who made the question for the course I am in.

So they are saying that the correct answer should be "but increasing numbers of consumers make its way to the countryside?"
Maybe that would be right if it said something along the lines of, "but an increasingly large group of consumers is making its way to the countryside."

I studied English Language in college and this is making me doubt my ability to form simple sentences.

I think so too. Only thing that really fits is its because their by definition shouldn't be used. Agreed, sentence should be rewritten haha.
