he US has warned it is ready to use force "if we must" to stop North Korea's nuclear missile program but says it prefers global diplomatic action against Pyongyang for test-launching an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, told a UN Security Council meeting that North Korea's actions were "quickly closing off the possibility of a diplomatic solution" and the US was prepared to defend itself and its allies.

"One of our capabilities lies with our considerable military forces. We will use them if we must but we prefer not to have to go in that direction," Haley said on Wednesday.

She urged China, North Korea's only major ally, to do more to rein in Pyongyang.

Taking a major step in its missile program, North Korea on Tuesday test-launched a Hwasong-14 missile it says could carry a large nuclear warhead.

Some experts believe it has the range to reach Alaska and the Pacific northwest of the US.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the test completed his country's strategic weapons capability that also includes atomic and hydrogen bombs, according to the state KCNA news agency.

Pyongyang will not negotiate with the US to give up those weapons until Washington abandons its hostile policy against the North, KCNA quoted Kim as saying.

US President Donald Trump has frequently urged China to press the isolated country's leadership to give up its nuclear program.

Haley said the US would propose new UN sanctions on North Korea in coming days and warned if Russia and China did not support the move then "we will go our own path".

Diplomats say Beijing has not been fully enforcing existing sanctions on its neighbour and has resisted tougher measures such as an oil embargo, bans on the North Korean airline and guest workers, and measures against Chinese banks and other firms doing business with the North.

China's UN ambassador, Liu Jieyi, told the Security Council the missile launch was a "flagrant violation" of UN resolutions and "unacceptable".

"We call on all the parties concerned to exercise restraint, avoid provocative actions and belligerent rhetoric, demonstrate the will for unconditional dialogue and work actively together to defuse the tension," Liu said.

Russia's deputy UN envoy, Vladimir Safronkov, said military force should not be considered and called for a halt to the deployment of a US missile defence system in South Korea.

He also said attempts to strangle North Korea economically were "unacceptable" and sanctions would not resolve the issue.

Trump and other leaders from the G20 meeting in Germany this week are due to discuss steps to rein in North Korea's weapons program.

North Korea isn't blowing the Americans up. They have been claiming this literally for years. You guys literally have nothing to worry about, unless somehow your missile defense shield is just straight up bad at which case you have bigger threats to worry about than North Korea -- news flash, your missile defense shield isn't some technology that is 30+ years behind like North Korea's is. The only people who need to worry is South Korea and maybe Japan.

IMO i just wish we could drop like 4 nukes on them because they can take our innocents and hold them hostage and torture them and we cant just blow there whole country up

Ya dumb...You're dumb if you think that's an answer to anything. Drop 4 nukes on that tiny little country? America's nukes have gotten a lot bigger since the last time you guys dropped them on a country, like A LOT bigger. Let's see who gets hit by the nuclear fallout. South Korea is literally gone - which is a US ally, buh-bye. Japan will suffer radiation damage from the trade winds, on top of the already radiation damage they have from the Fukushima Daiichi that they're dealing with - another US ally. Then you guys hit China and Russia with nuclear radiation and depending where the bomb was dropped, maybe some of the blast. "Let's plunge the world into WW3 because we're nuking another Asian country because Kimmy-boy is throwing another tantrum." This isn't even accounting for the radiation that plagues the water and the yield that is eventually moved with the trade winds. Also what? "they [North Korea] can take our innocents and hold them hostage and torture them and we cant just blow there whole country up." LMFAO what my dude??? North Korea isn't going to come over here and smuggle an American back just to torture them and all of that shit. If you're talking about Otto Warmbier, he wasn't stolen from American land, he was in North Korea...of his own free will and got caught trying to steal a propaganda poster which landed him in jail. Was he tortured, sure. Did he die, yup, but he wasn't stolen from US land, he literally went there on his own accord and did something that he knew the risk of doing. Everyone else who is there that is American or any other national is because they entered into North Korea illegally or did something inside there that got them caught. Not sure if North Korea has any POWs from the Korean War or if they're even alive at this point. I'm not defending North Korea for what they do, I'm simply stating they're not going to come to America and start kidnapping people to take back to their country to torture and make them a slave/hostage.

More like copied and pasted a section from the source in here, then with a few personal sentences of paranoia and then wanting to nuke them; not really "help in writing this" lol

North Korea is not going to do anything. These "shows of force" they tend to do is just for that: show.

Unless the United States' defense grid is TERRIBLE, a missile will be detected as soon as it launches. North Korea is under vigilant watch by many, including South Korea.

Do I like what's going on over there? No. Do I want them to be nuked? Absolutely not. That would take South Korea and everybody around it. Not to mention the national outrage that would be caused by such an excessive use of force against such a small country.

The only time I've ever read of an American being taken on North Korean soil is that example which Taiga mentioned; Otto Warmbier. Other than that? Nothing at all.

There are innocent people living in North Korea too...

Killing innocent people is so bad that we should... kill innocent people?

Let's imagine that everything goes to plan. The US manages to overthrow the government in Pyongyang, no nukes are fired, there are minimal civilian casualties and it's the most successful war campaign the US has ever led, over in no more than a few months.
Let's just imagine that very far fetched scenario happened.

What then?

The US now has a country of 25+ million people - who have been brainwashed for their entire lives and believe that the US is a wasteland filled with cannibals - to lead.
How many years, decades even, of re-education, healthcare, and building modern infrastructure is that going to take?
How much money is this all going to take?

This is all supposed to happen while the US doesn't even have clean drinking water in Flint, Michigan.

It just isn't feasible. I believe it is the ethically correct thing to do, especially before North Korea manages to build a nuclear deterrent, which would essentially make it untouchable and the people living there be condemned to generations of physical and mental depravity, but it just wouldn't work. The political landscape of the world at the moment isn't set up to facilitate a regime change on that scale.
