Traces of faecal bacteria have been found in drinks at three of the world's biggest fast food chains in the United Kingdom.
An investigation has found that McDonald's, Burger King and KFC all served ice in drinks contaminated by faecal matter. Investigators from the BBC consumer show, "Watchdog", tested ten samples at each of the chains and tested for traces of "faecal coliform" which carry a number of diseases.
Coliforms were found in three samples of McDonald's drinks, six of Burger King's and in seven samples taken at KFC sites. Four of the samples taken at Burger King and five at KFC were described as having "significant" levels.
In a response, reported widely by media, a KFC spokesman said: "We are shocked and extremely disappointed by these results."
"We have strict procedures for the management and handling of ice, including daily and weekly inspections and cleaning of the ice machine and storage holds, as well as the routine testing of ice quality across our business."
Burger King's response has also been widely circulated by media outlets: "Cleanliness and hygiene are a top priority for the Burger King brand."
"The strict procedures we have in place are designed to ensure all Guests have a positive experience each time they visit our restaurants," the Burger chain added.
Neither KFC or Burger King were immediately available for a response when contacted by CNBC.

Fecal matter is on literally almost everything.
Everyone excretes and even if you wash your hands afterwards it is still on your hands, in the air around you, on your clothes, and wherever there are people there is fecal matter.
They could do the same test on expensive strawberries in Tesco, fecal matter.
The raw chicken and probably the cooked chicken at Nando's, fecal matter.
Your face and lips right now, fecal matter.
It's tiny, it gets everywhere and there's really nothing you can do to stop it. Just think of it in the same way as dust mites.
They are there, but do you really care about them? Nope.
Of course the less there is the less likely you are to be made ill from it, so they should probably take a look at these 'significant' amounts in some of the drinks.
To be completely honest though, I doubt anyone who eats at McDonalds really cares about a bit of poop in their drink considering what they are eating anyway.

Was never fond of the fast food industries. Never will be.
And this is one of many reasons why.
