Hi,

I have just purchased a 2001 Mazda MX-5 Mk2 currently running at 103,000 miles, it's also a 1.6. There was recently an M.O.T on this vehicle and it received some advisories if anyone could take a look at these problems and let me know roughly how much I'd be looking at to get these fixed and how urgently the repairs would need to be carried out.

Thanks if you need anymore details please just let me know! Cheers.

Advisories noted:
1. Front x member rusty.
2. Rear x member rusty.
3. Both side sill.
4. Both side floor two sill.
5. o/s/r handbrake.

To the best of my knowledge rust depending on how bad is very expensive to fix. It might not be urgent to sort but I have no idea. As for the handbrake whats wrong with it? Does it work? Are the cables seized? Handbrake is not urgent to fix but definitely worth doing.

Handbrake isn't anything major really works alright it's the rust I'm a little worried about and not too sure what it means by sills?

Cheers for replying mate

So you don't know how much rust it is? Shouldn't be too bad, if I were to go about doing it, I would just sand the cross members down, see if the rust had eaten thru anything, and patch it up if it did. But if it didn't, even better.

Cheers mate, any idea if it's eaten through and worst case scenario what I'd be looking at cost wise I know it's hard to tell as at the moment I'm not too sure the extent of the rust.

Not sure what the price would be to have it worked on, you can go anywhere and just ask tho.

Depends on how much needs to be done. If it needs new sills, welding and a lot of patch work including a full new undercoat you could be talking hundreds.

MX-5's are prone to serious rust.

If the rust isn't too bad I would try getting an electric wire brush and giving it a good clean with it, putting on a decent amount of rust converter where it is rusted and prime the whole thing and give it a coat of chassis paint. Should keep it alright for a while.
