Windows Defender comes with all Windows versions after 8. Malwarebytes (free version) is a good "second opinion" tool to supplement an AV.

This.
Also if you don't know what you're about to click on or you don't trust it, don't open it.

To me, the AVG now a good anti virus program if paid, but the trial is too filled with bloatware in my opinion. Also, AVG uses a lot of background processes on the CPU. I've seen it actually slow down lower end computers more than it helps. Good program, just would recommend buying it if you use it. I personally just use Windows Defender and run a .bat file that debloats every once and while.

Write it in a program such as notepad and save it as a batch file. It also has other text files that tell it where to target.
If you wanna PM me, I'll share some .bat files that will do a full clean up of your pc ran in safe mode.
